Temporary Decor Ideas for Military Housing

{WARNING: LONG POST TO FOLLOW}

This past weekend I was able to visit a military base for the first time as my sister and brother-in-law, who is in the Air Force, moved onto base housing. I had never been on a base before and really found the whole thing to be very pleasant and quaint. My sisters new home is actually much nicer than I would have imagined as I feel I've always heard adverse things about military housing. The home seemed extremely well kept & up to date. Nothing fancy, but not bad at all.

As the man & I were driving back home I began to brainstorm about how you would decorate a home that didn't belong to you and that had to be kept in essentially the same condition as when you moved in, much like an apartment. My sister says that the official rule is, 'white walls in, white walls out', meaning you can paint, but you do so with the understanding that you will be required to repaint back to white before you move. With this idea in mind I've compiled a list of easy, stylish, & temporary decor ideas for base housing (which also apply to apartment dwellers as well).

In the past several years there has been a major increase in the popularity of vinyl wall decals. To be honest, I'm generally not a huge fan, however, wall decals have really taken on a life of their own and they no longer are just names & phrases. Wall decals come in nearly every shape, size, color, or design imaginable - and the best part is that they are very inexpensive temporary decor. There are tons of companies that offer standard or custom designs, they are even available on Etsy. Here are some that caught my eye:

Another great alternative with a big impact is temporary wallpaper or wallcoverings. Many of us have had the unfortunate experience of taking down preexisting wallpaper, but with the invention of temporary wallpaper this experience is a thing of the past. There are a few companys that carry this product, namely Sherwin Williams (Easy Change Wallpaper), Paper Apartment, and TemPaper. I wasn't able to find out much about the Sherwin Williams product, but it didn't seem super user friendly. Paper Apartment papers come in a blank paper role (choice of color) and a paint pen for making your own designs. It is attached to the wall with 3M stick tabs (the tabs sounded to me like they were essentially large scrapbook tabs). It seemed as if Paper Apartment papers weren't as user friendly and truthfully were difficult to install and time consuming to decorate. Overall it seems as if TemPaper is the favorite, and with a little research it isn't hard to see why - it is stinkin' easy to put up and take down. There are 5 VERY basic rules of application that I would liken to peeling the back off of a label and sticking it on the wall. It supposedly (from the website & individual reviews) removes as easy as a post-it. Here are some of their designs:

Another great way to cover your walls temporarily is an old method of using fabric and good old liquid starch. This is a pretty simple project and as long as you choose an inexpensive fabric it can also be done for a reasonable amount. For full directions on how to 'fabric' your walls click here.

I hope that these tips find all military and apartment dewellers doing well and feeling inspired!

The Proposal

As part of my birthday weekend the man took me to see The Proposal. I LOVED it! Not only was it funny and flat out adorable by chick flick standards but the house set was FABULOUS.
The movie is set in Sitka Alaska.
Here are some photos of the house.

If you haven't seen this movie then get to the theater - you'll love it!

Summer Solstice

Summer is now well under way and that means that one day is quickly approaching - my BIRTHDAY! I have the good fortune of being born on the summer solstice, which also coincides with the official start of summer. (The first day of summer is always June 20th or the 21st depending on where you live.)

In celebration of the impending solstice (the longest day of the year) I thought I would send out some summer solstice party love.

Summer events require a light/fresh menu. Fruits, vegetables & William Sonoma Mojitos are a MUST for a summer solstice party:

A party in celebration of the longest day of the year will strectch in to the wee hours of the night/morning - so lighting is very important!

I love these outdoor globes & these colorful tiki torches!

Keep the decor relaxed and casual - keep the focus of this long day on good drinks and great friends!

I hope you're enjoying your summer!

Summer Party Inspiration

This post did not start out intending to be an outdoor party inspiration post, but one fabulous photo led to another which bred this post.

I have heard some flak about the whole idea of the 'outdoor room' or 'outdoor space' from several sources. Personally I like the idea of hosting events outdoors and making them feel like an extension of an indoor space. Some of these inspiration photos are more elaborate than others (they were to fab to exclude) but some of these are perfect in their simplicity. Hopefully you'll find inspiration for your next summer gathering!

From My Lifetime
What I like about this table setting is that it really does seem as if it could be put together from any home in America. There is nothing spectacular about any of the pieces here except that they've been artfully arranged. Remember when you're looking at an inspiration photo it is inspirational, not necessarily for reproduction. Any light throw or scarf could be used as well as any assortment of candle holders, vases, and white dishware.

I included this photo again because it would be easy to replicate. Many people have tiled patio tables - don't cover up all that gorgeous color - use it to jump start your table setting. A paired down dinner set lets the table top shine through with some well coordinating accents.
Mix & Match table setting from Madison Magazine
This looks like a basic picnic table with coordinating colored dinnerware and accessories. Perfect coordination sometimes is stuffy - this is much more casual and laid back.
Here are some more elaborate examples for weddings or larger scale events:

The lights on the ceiling could be replicated in any event. For a smaller event the basic principal of this photo can still be translated. The biggest thing to take away from this is to choose a unifying color palette and pattern and carry it through the entire event.
Being a country native and someone who has attended and helped execute many a hay ride in my day, I LOVE this idea! The set up looks pretty basic - but I would suggest a blanket over those hay bales when it's actually time to sit - no one wants those sticking their backside!
P.S. Many thanks to Jon for showing me how to create links within my posts so I don't have to copy & paste the web addresses any more! I'm SO tech challenged - I never would have figured that out on my own!

Blog Housekeeping

Now that this blog has been around for a while, and I've started posting more regularly, I decided to clean up my labels so that it is easier to reference older posts. If you scroll down the right hand column you will now be able to click on a variety of labels to pull up posts within a specific topic. This has been a reference on here for a while now, but I recently (aka, yesterday) went through and better catagorized these posts. I hope that this will help all of you to find things better. Some of the new catagories that may interest you are 'Real Parties' where you can view event photos of the some of the past events I have personally been apart of, 'Party Planning' to find my serious of blog posts from last spring that were an indepth resource to hosting an event or the 'Event Inspiration' and 'Home Inspiration' catagories that cover more non-specific topics that I post about.

Enjoy!

Anniversary Dinner Party

This weekend I had the opportunity to host a surprise anniversary party for my in laws who have been married 32 years this past May. We were small in numbers (at 9) but big on surprise & style! The guest list included myself & my husband, my 2 brother in laws and their respective girlfriends, my husband's grandmother, and the guests of honor: my mother & father in law. I was surprised that all the boys in the family were so excited about this event and it made for a really fun and memorable evening. Here are some of my (very humble) photos from the event.

Simple snacks for the wait before the in-laws arrived.
The dining table set for 9.

Place settings (I adore these plates!)

Of course flowers...
Another shot of the place settings. Yellow, silver, and green napkins complemented the dinnerware.
